diner sheshe ghumer deshe - The Day's End

The veiled shadow of the day embraces the drawing night

Enthralling my heart

The illusory golden shore of the misty further bank

Sing the closing song.

Heads down, merriment over, those at the departing time

Do not turn around on their journey back.

Drawn by the ebb tide I’ll join them leaving this abode -

As evening draws, day passes by.

Oh! come

To take me away

At the day’s end, by the last boat.

By the evening tide from the further bank

By the dwindling light

Has a boat left for me?

With the setting sun, close to the shore by the shade of the dense wood

Like a shadow I see them row

Should I hail, would he reply?

Is there someone obliging so?

Oh! come

To take me away

At the day’s end, by the last boat.

Those leaving for home, have long gone

Those left for the shore, have long reached

Neither at shore nor at home, the one in between

Who shall take him away when the dusk falls?

No flowers to offer, crops failed

He laughs at his fate

For him the daylight is over and the night doesn’t shine

He’s the one alone sitting by the bank.

Oh! come

To take me away

At the day’s end, by the last boat.
