I call her Krishnokoli - the girl whom the folks call dark
On a cloudy day at the field I saw the dark girl’s dark gazelle eyes,
She wasn’t veiled at all, open locks of hair rolled over her back
Dark? very well dark she may be, but I saw her dark gazelle eyes.
Gazing at the darkening cloud, the buffaloes lowed
From her hut that was why came she rushing out full of woe
Listened to the thundering cloud, glancing at the sky, raising her brows
Dark? very well dark she may be, but I saw her dark gazelle eyes.
The eastern wind came chasing, making the paddy sway
Standing on the meadow-skirts it was just me and none other there,
Whether she looked at me or not, known only to me and her
Dark? very well dark she may be but I saw her dark gazelle eyes.
Thus gathers rain clouds in summer months in the north-eastern skies
Thus draws the dark soft shadow of rainy months over the Tåmal trees
Thus fills heart on Shrabån eve with a sudden gush of gaiety
Dark? very well dark she may be, but I saw her dark gazelle eyes.
I call her Krishnokali, whatever others may call her by
At the meadows of Moynapara, I saw the dark girl’s dark gazelle eyes.
Her head wasn’t veiled and she had no time to feel shy
Dark? very well dark she may be, but I saw her dark gazelle eyes.
